This delicious barley and wheat bread is really satisfying. It has a lovely texture. It’s crunchy and chewy around the edges and soft in the middle. You will love this rustic combination of wheat and barley which makes it’s really flavorsome. The nutty flavour is a great combination with butter or dipped in a soup for lunch. My favourite way to have it is toasted with chopped avocado for breakfast!
I adore the smell of freshly baked bread, warm, comforting and nostalgic. Once you taste this homemade bread you will never go back to the shop bought stuff. I love it, especially after I’ve come back from a brisk walk in the morning. My daughter has an uncanny sense of smell when it comes to fresh bread. As soon as it’s out of the oven, she is downstairs like a shot! Barley bread fresh from the oven slathered in butter… yummy! Try it with cream cheese, another delicious combination.Barley bread with avocado
Adding a Sunnah Food
I’ve been trying to incorporate barley into my diet because it’s got so many great health benefits. One being, keeping blood sugar levels stable which can help in your weight loss efforts and it’s a Sunnah food. So a convenient bread seemed the best way to go.
Finally, I’ve found a great way to eat barley regularly. This recipe is low in salt it’s got no refined sugar. I can still stay sugar-free! Barley has a calming effect on the digestion and because of its low GI level, it’s perfect for sustaining you until the next meal. You will get lots of fabulous nutrients, iron, potassium and 15% of your daily fiber needs in one slice! The fiber in it helps keep you regular and it is the grain chosen by the prophet (PBUH). Slowly incorporating it into your diet like this 50/ 50 bread will help your body adjust to the additional fiber content and you may be able to tolerate a pure barley bread or chapati better. I’m going to experiment with a pure barley bread for those wanting a wheat free version soon, so watch this space!
Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went to bed hungry for several successive nights, nor did his family have a thing for supper for many consecutive nights; and their bread was mostly of barley.
(At- Tirmidhi: Book 1, Hadith 514)
Only 10 minutes to mix up
Convenience is important when you’re catering for children and the rest of the family so this bread recipe involves very little preparation and effort. It’s really a matter of chucking all the ingredients together, kneading the dough and putting it on a tray to bake. I wasn’t missing bread very much since I replaced it with homemade chapati but i do like quick options. All the family will enjoy a piece of this barley bread in the morning. It’s a perfect go to option when you’re in a hurry, trying to get to work or drop the kids at school.
I eat the bread toasted with avocado chopped on top for breakfast. It’s a great start to the day and healthy. You get your healthy fats in which are good for your skin and it keeps you full until lunch. Because it doesn’t contain any preservatives like shop bought bread be sure to keep it wrapped in a bag in the fridge!!
Try it out and let me know how you found it by giving it a star rating and leaving a comment. Enjoy and benefit from the blessings of incorporating another Sunnah of the Prophet PBUH.
